  2. Australian right-wing politician, leader of
  3. the Queensland National Party (QNP) and
  4. premier of Queensland 1968-87.
  5. Bjelke-Petersen, the son of a Danish Lutheran
  6. pastor, took a consistently right-wing
  7. political stance throughout his long career,
  8. which was not without blemish: he was accused
  9. more than once of electoral gerrymandering.
  10. In 1987 he broke the coalition of the QNP
  11. with the Australian Liberal Party to run for
  12. prime minister, but his action, by splitting
  13. the opposition, merely strengthened the hand
  14. of the Labor prime minister Bob Hawke. He was
  15. voted out of office in 1987.
